Better Homes And Gardens Country Star Wallpaper Border

Charleston-based interior designer Angie Hranowsky developed chemistry with her clients, country star and former Hootie and the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker and his wife Beth, almost immediately. "This was the first time we worked together," Hranowsky shares. "Beth consulted with me briefly while they were building the house and then called me the minute they moved in and hired me." From this moment on, the women developed a partnership in order to transform the new-construction house into a functional home for the couple and their three children.

Meet the Expert

Angie Hranowsky is an interior designer based in Charleston, SC. She was named one of the "20 Designers To Watch" by Traditional Home. Her work has also been featured in high-end publications like Architectural Digest, Luxe, Metropolitan Home, and House Beautiful.

"Beth was very involved in the process and she has a very good eye," the designer tells us. "She's the kind of client where I would come over, and she would say 'look at this cool painting I found,' and it would be perfect for the house." A thoughtful combination of color, texture, form, and function brings the home to life to personalize the space for the busy family. "This is their year-round residence, so they wanted a home that was functional and inviting but also unique," Hranowsky says.

A White Backdrop Invites Color and Texture

Julia Lynn

"The overall concept for the house became a white backdrop that allowed us to bring in color and texture with beautiful furniture and artwork," the designer says. "The other inspiration for the main living and kitchen space came from the Buddha portrait over the fireplace. It's done entirely out of old bottle caps by local artist Molly B. Right."

Books Add Comfort

Julia Lynn

"Beth and I both have an affinity for books and bookcases," Hranowsky says. "I designed the bookcase to the right of the fireplace and added the benches in the foyer and behind the sofa to stack even more books. They are a great way to add comfort to a room."

Abstract Art Adds Interest

Julia Lynn

The group commissioned the living room's large abstract from artist Sally King Benedict.

Dusty Pastel Palette Lives Throughout

Julia Lynn

A colorful palette comprised of warm corals, dusty purples, and textured neutrals, plus punctuations of soothing yellow, developed. "In the past, Beth gravitated toward white, black, and more neutral tones, but with this house she wanted me to push her a little bit," Hranowsky shares.

In terms of function, Rucker had a specific concept for their open-plan kitchen and living spaces. "They have a keeping room, which is the seating area you see between the living room and kitchen," says Hranowsky. "This is where they spend much of their time if they're hanging out and watching TV. It was important to Beth that they have enough comfortable seating for themselves, as well as for visiting friends and family."

The designer enlisted artist Kate Long Stevenson to create the figure hanging in the couple's primary bedroom.

Primary Bedroom

The term "Primary Bedroom" is now widely used to describe the largest bedroom in the home, as it better reflects the space's purpose. Many realtors, architects, interior designers, and the Real Estate Standards Association have recognized the potentially discriminatory connotations in the term "Master." Given that this is the family's primary residence and they have children, Hranowsky was careful to make sure the design was durable and able to withstand a beating. "We spent a lot of time picking out fabrics that would hide dirt, but didn't compromise the design," the designer says. "We were very thoughtful about how every piece would function in the house."

A Blend of Contemporary and Vintage Pieces Lend Personality

Julia Lynn

To give the home a sense of age and personality, the designer mixed vintage and contemporary pieces, lending the home a collected vibe. "I incorporate vintage pieces into every home I design," says Hranowsky. "I love things with a history and I'm modernist at heart. I think it's quite easy to use vintage furniture and art without it being too precious."

"I always strive to design homes that are original and beautiful but also comfortable," Hranowsky shares. "I use a lot of texture and color and I mix periods to create a balance that's sophisticated, but approachable." With this home as proof, we'd say the designer's formula is a winning combination.
